A dental crown is a dental prosthesis that is made to look and feel just like a natural tooth. Crowns are bonded into place over your existing tooth structure after it has been prepared. They cover up your natural enamel all the way down to the gumline, essentially replacing your natural tooth and protecting your remaining enamel from further damage.
Dental crowns can be used for a variety of purposes. Most commonly, they’re used to restore teeth that have cavities too large to be filled, or that have been damaged by dental trauma. They can also be used to replace large, old fillings, and to cover up teeth after root canal therapy. More rarely, dental crowns can be used for cosmetic purposes if a treatment like dental bonding or veneers is not appropriate.
Wondering if you need a lab-made dental crown from Rocky Mountain Dental Co.? If you believe that you have a large cavity or a damaged tooth, you may need treatment with a dental crown. If you’d like to find out whether or not a crown is right for you, we recommend scheduling an appointment with Dr. Dave. He can examine your mouth, discuss your options for restorative care, and ensure you receive the correct treatment for your needs.
It takes two appointments to build and place a lab-made dental crown. After Dr. Dave has approved you for a crown, you’ll come in for your first appointment. First, he will begin by numbing your mouth and cleaning the treatment area.
Next, Dr. Dave will use a dental drill to remove any damaged or decayed enamel from the tooth in need of repair. After this, he will prepare the tooth to make room for your dental crown, and ensure it fits properly. Once your tooth has been prepared, he will take images and dental impressions of your teeth. Then, you’ll get a temporary crown and you’ll be sent home.
The images and impressions of your teeth will be sent to our dental lab partners, where your crown will be custom-built to match your teeth perfectly. It usually takes about 2-3 weeks for your crown to be made and sent back to our office.
Once we receive your new crown, you’ll come in for your second appointment. Dr. Dave will check the fit and if everything looks good, he’ll bond it into place with an advanced dental adhesive, completing the procedure.
Dental crowns are minimally-invasive. As soon as your crown has been placed, you can get back to your day-to-day life. Your tooth may feel a bit tender for a few days after your appointment, but you won’t feel any other side effects and you won’t have to change your diet.
